Dojo Etiquette

We aim to provide a safe, respectful space to learn and practice Jiu-Jitsu. For this reason, we ask that our members and visitors adhere to the following rules.


  1. Bow to the center of the mat when you enter.

  2. Bow to the center of the mat when you exit.

  3. Keep a respectful posture in the academy.

  4. Classes begin with students lining up in descending grade order.

  5. Classes begin and end with a formal bow to the Professor and to the picture of the Grand Master Carlos Gracie Sr.

  6. For safety reasons, if you are late, you must wait by the side of the mat until the Professor gives you permission to enter.

  7. For safety reasons, if you need to leave the mat early, you must ask permission from the Professor.

  8. Bow to your partner before and after practice.

  9. Talking should be kept to a minimum level and should relate to the class subject.

  10. Absolutely no foul language inside the academy.

  11. Keep finger and toe nails short for everyone’s safety.

  12. The uniform pants and top must be the same color.

  13. It is mandatory to wear a t-shirt or rash guard underneath your Gi.

  14. A dirty Gi is a sign of disrespect. Please keep your Gi clean.

  15. When tying your belt, face the wall.

  16. Refer to Black belt instructors as “Professor”.

  17. All metal objects, jewelry, piercing, necklaces, or other such items should be removed while training.

  18. No shoes, food, or drink on the mat.

  19. It is mandatory to wear shorts and a black t-shirt or rash guard for No Gi classes.

  20. Any change in attire needs to be done in the appropriate dressing room.
